Permission to Play - Improv Piecing Class

About this experience

Permission to Play is a 2 day class from 10-4 on Friday and 10-4 on Saturday. Click the book now button for upcoming dates and to reserve your seat!

Just let it go! Be free with your quilting! Why is that so much easier said than done? This improv piecing class will help us all find more freedom in our sewing. During the two day course, we’ll learn about current improv quilters and techniques to kick start our own improv journey. Amy will lead the class through several piecing prompts throughout the course, and there will be ample time to build on these skills and try them out for yourself. Grab your scraps and come play with us!

Supplies: Sewing Machine, Scissors and/or Rotary Cutter, Cutting Matt, Iron, Thread

Fabric: This is a great time to use up scraps. I would suggest picking a color pallet you like and having 2-3 darker fabrics and 2-3 lighter fabrics to build contrast in your work.

Amy Morris is an Iowa based artist working in textiles. Driven by process, improv piecing and use of recycled and upcycled materials are a large part of her work. The majority of her current works are putting scrap fabrics to work - using them improvisationally to “create fabric” for traditional blocks as well as creating whole quilts from scraps. Amy is drawn to the visually clean lines and solid colors of modern quilting - though passing up a nice patterned fabric is sometimes hard to do.

Amy received her Bachelor of Fine Arts from Lamar University in Beaumont, Texas. She exhibited work at The Art Museum of Southeast Texas and the Museum of the Gulf Coast with her Submerged series of encaustic paintings and quilts based on Hurricane Harvey. In 2022 The X Quilt was part of the Modern Quilt Guild 10 year anniversary exhibition at QuiltCon in Phoenix.
